Known for creating many of the early OS-tan characters, Futaba Channel is a Japanese imageboard. Launched on August 30, 2001, it quickly gained popularity as an image-centric alternative to text-only forums like 2ch.net, especially during periods when 2ch.net was grappling with server overload issues.
The concept of OS-tans, personifications of well-known operating systems, made their debut on Futaba Channel as a creative response to the instability issues of Windows Me. The character Me-tan, introduced around August 6, 2003, embodied these issues and was often depicted in forum discussions as a clumsy and problematic girl. This concept was expanded to include OS-tans for other Windows versions such as 3.1, 95, 98, XP, each portrayed as sisters with unique traits reflecting their respective operating systems.
